Job Summary

CannaRoyalty Corp. (CR) is a Canadian based fully integrated active participant in the legal cannabis sector with a focus on building a portfolio of assets in the areas of research, brands and devices as well as supporting infrastructure assets. The Opportunity

CR is seeking a Senior Accountant / Divisional Distribution Controller to lead its Northern California finance operations headquartered in the San Francisco East Bay area and Santa Rosa to help support CR’s portfolio of assets and its continued growth trajectory in this region.

Responsibilities and Duties

The position will be an active member of both the Corporate Finance team and the California Operations management team. The core responsibilities of the position touch many aspects of the finance function from cost accounting for cannabis Distribution to the month end close process, financial and management reporting, treasury & cash management, taxation, development and implementation of financial policies and procedures and internal controls. The position of Divisional Distribution Controller includes both active hands-on accounting for various entities as well as overseeing the Finance functions of several subsidiaries.

The position’s main responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead, direct and supervise staff accountants at various CR subsidiaries;
  • Ensure that job & manufacturing costs are appropriately tracked, analyzed and reported for both internal management and statutory reporting purposes. Review and approve supplier invoices and overhead charges related to manufacturing;
  • Assist in researching, recommending and implementing appropriate ERP systems across all companies;
  • Ensure that all relevant government reports and sales tax returns are complete and accurate and submitted by applicable deadlines;
  • Ensure the accurate and timely transaction processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory & payroll for multiple companies. Complete bank & credit card reconciliations. Assist in the production of the financial statements of CR’s subsidiaries and divisions. Assist other CR interests in their accounting and finance needs to ensure CR’s financial reporting needs are met;
  • Assist with Human Resource functions as needed;
  • Work in collaboration with senior management to prepare the annual budget, monthly forecasts and relevant variance analysis;
  • Assist in the preparation of applicable income tax and property tax returns and ensure compliance with all local, state and federal tax legislation and regulations is maintained;
  • Assist management in reviewing new investment opportunities and make recommendations based on financial and commercial analysis. Support the due diligence process on investment opportunities that are selected for execution of a commercial agreement;
  • Ensure that effective and appropriate internal control frameworks are in place in all subsidiaries; this could involve designing and implementing certain controls to ensure continuous improvement of the control environments.
  • Work collaboratively with the companies in the holdings portfolio to obtain and help generate financial statements and other information required to assist the Corporate Finance function in completing its quarterly and annual reporting requirements by internally prescribed deadlines;
  • Collaborate and co-ordinate with accounting, legal, taxation and other relevant external service providers;
  • Assist with Corporate Finance function in planning and managing the annual audit process and applicable reviews of quarterly financial reports;

Qualifications and Skills

  • Relevant undergrad university/college degree (e.g. Business, Finance, Accounting);
  • Minimum of five years relevant work experience
  • Experience managing staff accountants/bookkeepers
  • Experience in a fast paced, growth environment
  • Experience working in a diverse, multi-stakeholder, multi-company environment
  • Experience in start-up environments
  • Any experience in the legal cannabis industry would be considered an asset
  • CPA designation or MBA considered an asset
  • Cannabis industry knowledge a plus

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced QuickBooks Enterprise experience in a multi-user environment
  • Experience in an ERP/MRP environment
  • Strong sales tax tracking and reporting experience
  • Cost accounting experience within a manufacturing industry
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Payroll processing, reporting & tax return filing experience
  • Able to work effectively in dynamic, fast paced environments
